WiSe 13/14: Fundamental Concepts of Statistical Data Analysis
Frank Lettau
Comments
This seminar should be attended by students of the 2nd or 3rd semester! It is particularly suited for Erasmus- and other exchange students.
Systematic treatment of fundamental statistical concepts, ideas and methods of analysis. Explanation of basic concepts like variable, unit of observation, sample, statistical (between-) variation, experimental (within-) variation, correlation and causality, univariate descriptive statistics, bivariate descriptive statistics, statistical inference. Outlook towards multivariate methods.
The approach is hands-on, with an actual data-set (taken from the US General Social Survey) and the widely-used computer program SPSS (now renamed IBM-SPSS).
All students will be required to take a written test (´Klausur´) towards the end of the semester. Those students who have registered for ´Leistungschein´ will be graded, the others just have to pass the test.
A seminar text will be provided. A mailing list will be installed as an effective means of communication, details will be given in the first lecture.
Recommended: Lecture 15020 Methoden der Politikwissenschaft from the previous Winter Semester.
