WiSe 13/14: The New Politics of Sin: Emerging Regulatory Frameworks for Sustainable Consumption and Ecological Lifestyles
Helge Jörgens
Comments
Morality politics or "politics of sin" constitute a specific class of public policy where debates are dominated by deeply rooted values and principles rather than by expertise. So far, scholarly research on morality politics has focused mainly on typical morality issues such as pornography, abortion, alcohol, illegal drugs and gay rights. In this seminar, the morality politics perspective will be extended to a new type of environmental policies: the attempt to make consumption and individual lifestyles more environmentally sustainable. Case studies will focus on vegetarianism, bans on plastic bags, the United Nations Food Waste campaign, phase out of incandescent lightbulbs, etc. The course will analyse whether the emerging regulatory frameworks for sustainable consumption and ecological lifestyles follow the logic of evidence-based decision making that thus far has been predominant in environmental governance or whether they follow a logic of moral sin that has been more characteristic of non-environmental issues of moral controversy.
