This class provides a first introduction to working methods in linguistics. The course gives a brief overview of the history of English and addresses the main subareas of linguistics such as phonetics and phonology (the study of sounds), morphology (the study of word structure), syntax (the study of the structure of sentences), semantics (the study of meaning), pragmatics (the study of meaning in context), and sociolinguistics (the study of the interrelation of language and society). Relevant literature will be announced in the first session of the seminar. close
