WiSe 13/14: V-Medieval English Literatures I: Entertaining Guidebooks to the Afterlife
Regina Scheibe
Comments
Following the ancient rhetoricians and Church Fathers, medieval authors did not consider entertainment and teaching as two mutually exclusive aspects of literature. To shed some light on these important facets of medieval English literary art, we will consider texts from a variety of genres, such as lyrics, ballads, fabliaux, exempla, debate poems, plays, and romances, and will relate them to medieval and modern literary criticism. Whenever relevant, social, political and art history will be touched upon as well.
Language of instruction: English. Required language level: C1-C2.
A reader of the relevant primary texts will be made available to students at the beginning of the semester.
