WiSe 13/14: S-Historical Linguistics: History of English II

This course links the study of the history of English with insights into general principles of language change. After a short introduction into methodological issues of historical linguistics, we will identify general processes of language change in focusing on different levels of linguistic structure (phonology, morphology and syntax, lexicon), and relate these to exemplary cases from the history of English. A particular interest is the interplay of internal (language-based) and external (social) factors of language change. This also includes the discussion of language ideological aspect with regard to language change, including language ideologies as they exist within linguistics and its disciplinary history. Schein requirements are a short presentation, a short paper and active participation in class. close
