WiSe 13/14: Writing on the Wall: Reading Spaces in American Cultural Studies
Kai Horstmannshoff
Comments
In this course we will look at a number of spaces and buildings that have taken center stage in the study of American (post)modernity: Boulevards, hotel lobbies, skyscrapers, airport terminals, theme parks, shopping malls, interstates, prisons etc. We will think about how these spaces could be understood to make visible particular aspects of life in (post)modern culture. The writings of theorists that have had a profound impact in the way space is studied and talked about in the humanities will be discussed in terms of works by American painters, architects, movie-makers, photographers and sculptors. close
