        This seminar addresses the philosophical fiction of the state of nature, and its interpretation in U.S. American literature and popular culture.
Readings will include Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Frederick Jackson Turner, James Fenimore Cooper, Walt Whitman, Djuna Barnes, Flannery O'Connor, Edgar Allen Poe, Richard Wright, Judith Butler and Giorgio Agamben. Participants will be expected to write a term paper and an essay, and to participate actively in in-class discussions.        close
