      WiSe 13/14: American Urban Politics
Margarita Mayer
Comments
This class deals with the institutions, actors and processes relevant to the American city. This includes an understanding of the importance of urban politics both on the national and local level and its major transformations in the course of the last decades. After an introductory section on contemporary theories in urban analysis, we turn to key issues in urban politics and analyze the policies that seek to deal with the problems thrown up by the economic crisis, globalization, restructuring, intra-urban competition, and the spatial and social consequences of these processes. Finally, we look at the ways in which social movements are formulating the 'right to the city' and challenging the neoliberalization of urban governance. close
