Übung: Representations of Alterity in Classical Arabic Literature
This course aims at exploring the discourses on alterity and otherness in Classical Islam as portrayed in a variety of literary genres. The classes would be focused on the close reading and discussion of texts by authors such as al-Jahiz, Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur, Ibn Qutayba, al-Razi, al-Ma'arri or the Ikhwan al-Safa. The criterion for the selection of the readings is thematic, and they will address topics directly -on indirectly- related to the representation of the 'other' in Classical Islam, ranging from inter-religious polemics and heresiography, to love and erotic discourses , ethnic quarrels, geographical accounts, or medicine.
