This course will introduce three Middle Iranian languages of the Silk
Road: Khotanese, Sogdian and Bactrian, in order to give an idea of the range of Iranian languages used between the North of the Sasanian Empire and China. After a general introduction a short grammar of and a survey of important texts in each of the three languages will be presented. In the second half of the semester the focus will be on Bactrian, the Middle Iranian language of northern Afghanistan and southern Tajikistan where we will contrate on reading some Bactrian inscriptions and representative legal documents.
The course will be in English, but explanations will also be offered in German, whenever necessary.
