This seminar, required for all incoming first year students to the Graduate School, is intended to provide a broad perspective on major social theories and disciplinary practices. There will be a significant focus on critically reading and discussing "canonical" theoretical and methodological texts which would, in turn, provide the necessary foundation for the graduate students to both contextualize their own research as well as contribute towards the efforts of their cohort. Structurally, the seminar will consist of a set of readings (distributed evenly between theoretical engagements and case-studies) organized around a set of key concepts. The students will be expected to produce a 1-2 page response to the readings prior to each class. The seminar will be discussion-focused wherein the students will critically engage with the methodologies, practices and conceptual frameworks at hand. close
