WiSe 14/15: Immigration Enforcement in the United States

In this seminar we will examine historical and current practices of US immigration enforcement and how they impact the lives of undocumented migrants. We will look at the development of immigration law and the institutions charged with enforcing it? We will analyze the increasing convergence of criminal law and immigration law as well as the role of detention and deportation in immigration enforcement. We will, moreover, discuss recent efforts to devolve immigration enforcement to local law enforcement agencies. And, we will, above all, analyze how immigration enforcement has shaped the daily lives of migrant communities. Last but not least, we will take a look across the Atlantic to compare immigration enforcement in the US and the EU.
Course requirements: Regular and active participation, presentation and written paper.
