WiSe 14/15: Heroes and heroines in Shakespeare
Claudia Olk
Kommentar
The popularity of Shakespearean drama rests, among many other things, on the heroes and heroines of his plays. In this course we will study a selection of plays in detail and examine theories and conceptions of character, virtue and heroism that preceded them and those that were created by them. We will look at the political, historical and social framework in which these models gained significance and analyse the interaction between Shakespeare's heroes and heroines and specific sociohistorical contexts, from the sixteenth century until today.
At the beginning of course students must be in possession of a critical edition (Cambridge, Oxford, or Arden) of the following plays: Macbeth, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Henry V.
