Scientific discussions about 'diasporas' became very popular during the 1990s, and up to this date, they owe a great deal to post colonial theories. Little has been said about Eastern European diasporas, although their literary production was rather influential in Europe during the two-three decades following the war.
The course proposes the analysis of exile literary cultures from several countries belonging to the former Eastern Bloc, discussing concepts such as emigration/ diaspora/ exile.
More specifically, the course will focus on:
o cultural and historical context which caused the exiles to leave their country of origin and geographical regroupment;
o relationship of the exiles with both the country of origin and the country of adoption;
o narratives of the homeland in exile literature;
o cultural associations, institutes, literary circles, libraries, newspapers, magazines created by the exiles;
o return after 1989 and impact on national mainstream culture.
While primarily focused on Romanian texts (Paul Goma, Norman Manea, Virgil Gheorghiu, Vintila Horia), readings will also include a variety of other East European writers (Danuta Mostwin, Pavel Tigrid, Milos Crnjanski, Witold Gombrowicz) for comparison purposes. Schließen
