WiSe 14/15: Interpreting Masterworks: Imagining Jerusalem

This course examines how Jerusalem has functioned as a site of imagination in multiple religious traditions as well as in Islamic art historiography. Students will learn about the relationship between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity as mapped onto the built environment of Umayyad Jerusalem, particularly at the Haram al-Sharif, and will consider how the interpretive practices of Islamic art history contribute to contemporary understandings of Jerusalem in its symbolic political role.
