WiSe 14/15: Propaganda, Misinformation and Truth in American Politics
Curd Benjamin Knüpfer
Kommentar
What is the difference between PR and propaganda? Why do falsehoods, rumors and conspiracy theories often persist, long after they have been debunked? Do politicians lie habitually, or do they merely frame the facts in politically convenient ways? This class will examine three central concepts pertaining to political communication and the nature of ideas driving political processes: propaganda, misinformation and truth. Through key texts and research examples, we will attempt to bridge the gap between theory and practice by looking at salient case studies as well as examples of how to operationalize such concepts in social science research. To do so, every class will consist of a variation of the following lose structure: (1) a discussion of key aspects based on previously assigned texts, (2) a short presentations of relevant research designs and their findings, and (3) brainstorming on practical applications and methods for potential future research projects. Doing so will help us to further speculate about their possible implications of these often misunderstood terms for current developments in U.S. politics and the general relationship between material interests and the impact of ideas.
