WiSe 14/15: V-Basic Questions, Concepts and Methods: Introduction to Literary Studies
André Otto/Jeff Thoss
Comments
This lecture offers an introduction to the study of English literature. We start with basic questions such as "What makes a literary text literary?" or "How is meaning created?". The main part of the lecture provides students with a range of methodological tools and the necessary terminology to analyse poetry, prose and drama. In addition, we present overviews of topics such as rhetoric, genre theory, literary history or schools of criticism and discuss concepts such as metafiction or intermediality.
The lecture intends to prepare students to become independent readers of literature who combine the pleasure of reading with a more systematic approach to literature that is interested in the effects of literature on readers and the world. It is accompanied by a weekly tutorial ("Working with Literary Texts") where these questions, concepts, and methods will be discussed in smaller groups.
The lecture is held in English.
Note that although attendance is not compulsory, it is highly recommended.
