WiSe 14/15: V-Introduction to Cultural Studies I:Introduction to Cultural Studies
Lukas Lammers
Comments
One of the basic assumptions of Cultural Studies is that systems of knowledge, texts, and different media, not only reflect a society and its norms, but actually produce them. Cultural Studies therefore explore, for example, how gender, ethnicity, nationality, and social class are expressed, constructed, and constantly (re-)negotiated.
This course aims to give an introduction to the central questions, approaches and terminology of British Cultural Studies. It will start with a brief survey of the historical development of the term "culture" and the field of study that emerged from a critical engagement with it. Following lectures will then introduce central concepts and approaches to analyse, interpret, and critique various cultural practices. In the lecture as well as in discussions we will focus mainly on contemporary cultural phenomena as represented in different genres and media.
Readings and other materials will be made available via the accompanying Blackboard site.
Language: The course will be taught in English (level C1).
