WiSe 14/15: S-Levels of Linguistics Analysis II: Semantics
Berit Johannsen
Comments
Semantics is generally defined as the study of meaning communicated through language. It thus revolves around the question how meaning is created and mediated through language. Approaching this central question, we will focus on lexical semantics, that is the meaning of words.
The course will be roughly divided into three parts: First, basic terminology and concepts of semantics will be introduced. Second, students will encounter theoretical approaches to word meaning, where the focus will be on so-called cognitive approaches (e.g. prototype theory, metaphor and metonymy). Finally, participants will be given a short introduction to corpus-based research and will present research papers from scientific journals, which will prepare them for writing their own academic papers.
Course requirements are regular attendance, weekly readings, a group presentation and a term paper (~2000 words).
