orms of female (self-)expression in the 1950s and 1960s: from
Confessional to Beat to Early Feminist literature
How did women writers express their ideas, feelings and experiences in the
two decades after WW II, a period generally understood as a period of
renewed conservatism and of the "Feminine Mystique"? What were their
favoured topics and genres? And was there a literature resisting the
stereotypical ideas about women at this time? This course will introduce
you to the texts of white and African-American women writers, who belonged
to the 'confessional', 'beat' and/or feminist movements and explore the
similarities and differences of their texts and ideas. Besides more known
writers such as Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton and Maya Angelou, we will also
discuss the works of lesser known poets such as Audre Lorde, Denise
Levertov and Anne Waldman.
Recommended reading in preparation for this course:
Betty Friedan, The Feminine Mystique (1963)
Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar (1963)
Maya Angelou, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings (1969)
Diane di Prima, Memoir of a Beatnik (1969) close
