Klaus Dietz
Comments
The course will begin with a general survey of World Englishes. The first section will cover American English, its history and its varieties. Section two will deal with European varieties of English outside Britain such as Irish English and with Australian, Canadian and New Zealand English which generally along with the Caribbean are referred to the so-called 'lesser varieties' of World Englishes. Section three will relate to English spoken in Africa, especially in South Africa and in Liberia, and will include recent changes of previously francophone to anglophone countries. Section four will survey the situation of English spoken in South and South-East Asia and its varieties in, for example, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, on the Philippines, in Hong Kong and in Singapore which belong to the outer circle of world Englishes. In the last section we will discuss principles of contact-induced language change of English as a superstrate language and the evolution of pidgin and creole varieties.
At the beginning of the class the participants will receive a bibliography containing the relevant literature.
