Seminar
WiSe 14/15: Shakespeare's Histories
Anne Enderwitz
Comments
The seminar focuses on Shakespeare's second historical tetralogy, the so-called Henriad: it comprises Richard II, 1 Henry IV, 2 Henry IV, and Henry V. The plays offer a chronological and coherent (albeit fictionalised) historical picture: they include recurring characters and offer a detailed anatomy of political power that requires some contextualisation. The practice of close reading will be central to our discussion of this epic cycle: the richness of Shakespeare's language emerges most fully in a careful and attentive reading of individual passages. We will also look at recent film productions of the plays such as The Hollow Crown (BBC) and other popular productions. close
