WiSe 14/15: Literary and Cultural Theories-HS-The Cornucopian Text
Andreas Mahler
Comments
The concept of the 'cornucopian text' (Terence Cave) has been developed with regard to Renaissance texts whose main function seems to lie in the celebration of language itself. The seminar, which will be divided into a plenary session (Tues. 18.00-19.30) and an additional hour for group discussions (Tues. 19.30-20.15; see section IV), will explore this idea by, first, focusing on early modern texts (mainly) in English that seem to fulfill this function and, then, by trying to enlarge the corpus so as to integrate the idea of the 'cornucopian' into the larger idea of 'literature' as a self-celebratory 'encyclopaedic' text. Participants of the seminar, which will be held as a kind of 'research seminar', are invited to familiarize themselves in advance with the notion of the 'cornucopian text' as well as to brainstorm as to possible literary texts to be included in the seminar corpus.
