WiSe 14/15: Reading the Roots of Arabic Literature.Poetry and Scripture
Ghassan El Masri
Comments
In this course we will go through a series of readings wherein we trace a number of literary elements, terms and expressions from their Biblical origins in the Old testament, through pre-Islamic poetry and finally in the Muslim scripture. The principle interest of the readings will be to get a better understanding of the transmission of Biblical elements in ancient Arabic poetry on the one hand and a deeper appreciation of the mode by which the Muslim scripture appropriated these elements, re-shaped them in light of its needs and introduced some of its own terms and concepts depending on its narrative needs. The course will be taught in German and English. close
