WiSe 14/15: A History of Performance Art

This seminar is on a History of Performance Art (European and N. American) with a historical, critical and practical orientation. Course will investigate performance art in 20th century art movements including: Futurist, Constructivist, Dada, Surrealist, Fluxus, and the development of happenings, and collaborative and interactive performance. There will be a focus on Eastern European performance art, particularly during the cold war period. We will investigate the work of Situationist International; consider the SI manifesto and the development of the derive and psycho-geographical performance in contemporary practice and research. Further explorations will be on performance art in New York during 70s/80s/90s/00s. We will discuss the influence and inclusion of various technologies in performance art. Students will be given performance assignments that derive from the discoveries they have made in relation to specific historical performance art practices. Students can also contribute to the course by giving their own presentation of work of a contemporary performance artist and/or art movement. The seminar will take place over two weekends - last weekend of November/beginning December. close
