WiSe 15/16: Methods of Comparative Social Movement Research
Heike Walk
Kommentar
Social movements are omnipresent - they range from citizens' initiatives against the construction of roads to revolts against authoritarian regimes right up to radical right-wring parades. They can be described as social alliances of people who are connected through their shared interest in blocking or affecting social change. Social movements are highly elusive phenomena that are inherently difficult to grasp.
Social movements are conceptualized in widely different ways. The objective of this seminar is to advance the systematic, scholarly, and scientific study of social movements, and to discuss methodologies, theories, and conceptual approaches. The methods cover the range of techniques: surveys, formal models, discourse analysis, in-depth interviews, participant observation, case studies, network analysis, historical methods, protest event analysis, macro-organizational analysis, and comparative politics.
