WiSe 15/16: Bloody Books: Theories of Violence
Birte Wege
Kommentar
Whether it be the horrors of World War I as presented by John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway, the ramifications of racial and/or domestic violence captured in Richard Wright's Native Son or Alice Walker's The Color Purple, the violence of consumerist society as portrayed in Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho, or the post-apocalyptic dystopia of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, violence in its many forms is a central element to wide sections of American literature. This seminar explores the many facets of violence. To this end, we will read a variety of primary texts (including, but not limited to those listed above) in conjunction with key theoretical texts by thinkers including Hannah Arendt, Georges Bataille, Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, W.J.T. Mitchell, Susan Sontag, and Slavoy Zižek. Schließen
