WiSe 15/16: PS-History of English II: Early Modern English
Kirsten Middeke
Kommentar
"History of English II" is an introduction to historical linguistics in general and the history of English in particular. With English as our object of investigation, we will study general principles of language change on different levels of linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicology). Students will be introduced to the aims and methods of diachronic linguistics and gain an understanding of the way human languages change, not just in the past, but also in the present and the future. In this seminar, we will confine ourselves to the Early Modern period, with some glances to before and after, to put things into perspective, so that there will be time for in-depth investigation of the principles of language change on the one hand and the Early Modern English language on the other.
Reading material will be made available at the beginning of the course.
