This seminar explores language change through studying the history of words. Against the backdrop of historical events, the expansion of the English vocabulary and changes in word meaning will be analysed. We will study the development of word-fields, varieties of region and register as well as related phonological and morphological processes. This seminar invites you to carry out your own investigations into the origin of words. You will learn how to use relevant dictionaries and how to avoid etymological pitfalls. Schließen
