WiSe 15/16: PS-Surveying English Literatures II: Approaches to World Literature

The idea of Weltliteratur first formulated by Goethe in 1827 takes on new resonance in the recent transcultural turn in literary and cultural studies. However, comparative literature and world literature scholarship has tended to reproduce a sustained focus on West European and North American texts. How can we best approach the "world" in "world literature"? What is the role of translation, and which the merits and pitfalls of reading in translation? In this seminar, we will read theoretical approaches to world literature and translation studies from David Damrosch, Franco Moretti, and Pascale Casanova, amongst others. We will examine methodological suggestions regarding the revision of entrenched Western literary taxonomies, and interrogate how effective these are, theoretically and in practice.We will sample an array of literature from East/Central Europe, Africa and Latin America. Students will be expected to attend regularly, participate actively in discussion, offer a class presentation, one short response paper, and a final essay.
