WiSe 15/16: Methoden: Medicalization of sexuality in the mass media

Medicalization has been described in research literature as a social trend of defining non-medical conditions as medical problems. In the process of medicalization medical thinking, its metaphors, values, and institutions among others exert practical and theoretical authority over particular areas of life.
This course is set to deal with medicalization of sexuality which encompasses various facets and experiences of human intimate sphere. Of particular interest is how the mass media represent sexuality in a medicalized manner and put emphasis on medical causes of sexual problems to be solved mainly through diagnostic, psychotherapeutic, psychiatric, surgical, and pharmaceutical interventions.
Students are expected to design an empirical research project and conduct the study along the theoretical lines of medicalization of sexuality in the mass media. The tasks include development of relevant research questions and/ or hypotheses, outlining of appropriate quantitative methodology, data collection and analysis as well as final presentation of the results.
