Kommentar
The recent developments in computer sciences and technology made communication with visual tools easier and more desirable. These developments raised new questions about the validity of visual reasoning and visual communication in sciences, especially in mathematics, since the visual representations and reasoning were deliberately taken out of mathematical practice for the last century.
The primary focus of this course will be on the changing notions of visual representations and visualization tools throughout the history of mathematics. A critical analysis of the approaches to these changes will be provided and compared to the current approaches.
Moreover, the key notions of visualization in mathematics will be analyzed from a philosophical perspective.
The course is offered in English, the papers and short written assignments (1-2 paragraphs each week) will be required, preferably in English and with consent in German.
