Zusätzl. Angaben / Voraussetzungen

Participants are required to have excellent or near-native fluency in English and German, a good command of Turkish (or another major contemporary Turkic language) and Ottoman (or Chaghatay), including the Arabic script. Basic skills in Arabic, Persian, and Russian are also needed. As the theoretical and methodological section focusses on the analysis of Classical Greek texts, at least the ability to read and look up Greek words is also essential. Schließen

Kommentar

The seminar is dedicated to the vocabulary, conceptual history, and literature of martyrdom, from the origins of (proto-)martyrdom to the present. Being a course in Turkologic studies, it focusses on Turkic authors with relevance to martyrdom, such as Yunus Emre, Nesimi, or Hatai. The contribution of these authors to the universal cultural history of martyrdom is evaluated against the backdrop of an analysis of the concept of martyrdom that comprises philosophical and psychological dimensions as well as the history of martyrdom. Starting from the origin of the notion of "martyrdom" in Ancient Greece and Judaism, we follow some characteristic interpretations of the term, in particular in the Islamic age. Schließen
