WiSe 15/16: Environmental Justice in theory and praxis
Götz Kaufmann
Comments
What is environmental justice and how can we apply this concept to better cope with complex real world problems?
The project based seminar will combine theory and practice to examine the theoretical considerations and foundations of environmental justice. We will explore issues pertaining to environmental justice across various sectors and various geographical contexts using an inter- and transdisciplinary framework. An important function of the seminar will be the ongoing exploration of concepts such as "environment", "justice", and grassroots orientations of this research field including "environmental racism". Thereby, gender in particular, but also agism, lookism, locism among other aspects of environmental discrimination will be considered.
The course will make use of both virtual and face to face classroom meetings. Herein, host guest lecturers from different research fields and geographical contexts will be regularly invited. Moreover, it is the aim of this course to bring students from different disciplinary backgrounds to work together on developing and conducting research on environmental justice.
Despite its specific structure, this is a regular seminar course. Thus, attendance, preparation, participation, and a final paper is required.
The class will be split into working groups to prepare a final project about an environmental justice issue pertaining to the Freie Universität. The projects will conclude with a group report, supplemented by individual reflections on the project process. This report and the individual reflections will be the principle of the grading.
This course is a joint initiative of SUSTAIN IT! and the Environmental Justice Institute at FFU. For further information see www.fu-berlin.de/sustain-it and www.environmentaljustice.de.
