WiSe 15/16: BRICS countries and climate change

This is a course about the BRICS which is the acronym for the association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. With their large and fast-growing economies, this course focuses on the ways these newly industrialized countries deal with challenges related to climate change. How do they deal with conflicting goals: on the one hand the policies which foster rapid economic growth, and on the other hand, those policies which strive to reduce environmental pollution and mitigate climate change? What kind of role does sustainable development or do green growth strategies play in these countries? How do public policies and markets work together in order to develop approaches to an inclusive low carbon development, if at all? In addition, the changing role of newly emerging world powers in the global climate governance system will be considered. Class meetings are designed to be a series of lectures, as well as discussions which build on the reading materials and work accomplished in small groups. close
