WiSe 15/16: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies II: Narratives of Migration
Sabine Schülting
Comments
The seminar will look at novels, short stories and films of the early 21st century - including Michael Winterbottom's In this World (2002), Monica Ali's Brick Lane (2003, 2007), and Andrea Levy's Small Island (2004). They all deal with one of the most serious challenges of our times: migration. We will analyze how these texts and films narrate the journeys of migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the Caribbean etc. to London, and how they address cultural encounters, confrontations and transformations. Topics of discussion will also include the relationship between home and host country, questions of identity and difference, and the relation between the individual and the community. In many cases, this will include narratives of suffering and trauma.
Students should purchase Monica Ali, Brick Lane. Transworld Publ. 2003 (paperback, c. 12 EUR), and Andrea Levy, Small Island. Headline 2004 (paperback, c. 12 EUR); they should have read Levy's Small Island by the beginning of the semester.
Assessment will be on the basis of regular attendance, active participation in classroom activities (including short response papers and presentations), and an essay of about 2,000 words. close
