WiSe 15/16: Protesting the Crisis - Social Movements and the European Crisis
Jochen Roose
Comments
In the course of the financial crisis in the European Union, we have witnessed a wave of protest. Social movements seem to be triggered by the events and challenge the institutional order. While Germany remains by and large untouched of both, the crisis effects and protest waves, especially in Southern Europe there have been large mobilizations.
With these protests in mind (and on the reading list) we approach related theories and debates. First, we sketch out a solid theoretical basis with the approaches of social movement studies in the center. Second, we add recent debates, e.g. the rise of a new cleavage and the politicization of the EU. Third, we will try to apply these arguments to understand the crisis protests.
