Advanced Seminar
WiSe 15/16: VS-Colonial and Postcolonial Literatures: Postcolonial Studies II: Greening Postcolonial Literature
Stephan Laqué
Comments
Postcolonialism and environmentalism stand united in their concern with and care for the oppressed, the voiceless, the invisible - be it the subaltern and the (post)colonial subject or the environment and animals. Considering that colonial and environmental exploitation have always gone hand in hand, it comes as a surprise that the critical approaches of postcolonialism and environmentalism have in the past often been at odds. This seminar will consider ways in which the two approaches can benefit from each other and will examine four novels which focus on the interrelation of colonization and environmental degradation, on the postcolonial relation between human beings and the environment. Please purchase the following novels: Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things; Yann Martel, Life of Pi; Amitav Ghosh, The Hungry Tide and Romesh Gunesekera, Reef. Please read The God of Small Things before the start of the semester. close
