Comments
As a consequence of the turn to global history, the category of gender threatens to be relegated to the margins of the historical field. Global historical narratives strive for macrohistorical syntheses, which leave little room for the category 'gender'. Global history attempts to establish structural similarities between various regional contexts, whereas gender history applies a microhistorical perspective that often (though not exclusively) emphasizes the singularity of individual lives and focuses on difference rather than comparison. Recent efforts have been made at overcoming this apparent incommensurability, whereby important impulses have come from postcolonial studies and the women and gender history. The goal of this course is to give an overview of these historiographical debates and to use select cases from the Early Modern period to explore new methods for reconceptualizing gender history from a global historical perspective. The languages of instruction are German and English. close
