WiSe 15/16: Ethnographies of Gender and Religion in South and South East Asia

The seminar is primarily structured around contemporary ethnographic portrayals that foreground gender and sexuality in public performances, experiences, and identifications in places that range from Kabul to Jakarta but also attending, albeit secondarily, to its global and diasporic continuities. The course engages with questions of female lived realities as well as everyday masculinities, and also includes in its analytical sphere, queer publics, trans* politics and imaginaries that complicate analytical and classificatory categories, not least, binary and dimorphic understandings of sex and gender. While a strong focus on ethnography is apparent, assigned readings will also incorporate key and contemporary discussion of gender and queer theory. Furthermore, material from film and literary texts, and occasional guest lectures will accompany readings and discussions in class. close
