WiSe 15/16: Religion in the Neoliberal Age

Recently, anthropologists and other scholars are asking the question "what is neoliberalism and how do neoliberal principles impact social life"? This seminar will approach the relation between religion and neoliberalism from multiple perspectives. It will explore how neoliberalism, consumerism, marketization and management affect religion in diverse societies and how religous groups and actors adapt, embrace and/or contest neoliberal values, discourses and principles of the market economy. Theoretical insights on Religion and Neoliberalism will be approached through ethnographic case studies mainly with a focus on Southeast Asia, East and West Africa. close
