Comments
This course retraces the adventure of modern poetics in its meeting with modern linguistics from the early 20th century onwards, with particular focus on the emergence of structuralism and post-structuralism. The sources of these currents will be sought in the Enlightenment and Romanticism. Various critical mishaps will be dealt with under a contemporary, mostly 21st-century, point of view of linguistics as a cognitive science and some questions of the analytical theory of Aesthetics will be brought to the fore, hopefully in such a way as to shed some light on the historical development of the so-called human sciences. The main field of application will be structuralist readings of Cavafy's poems: we will try to reassess structuralism's claims to science, but also practice re-reading the poems in unpretentious but still scholarly ways.
