WiSe 15/16: PS-Medieval English Literatures II: Early Middle English Romances

Students will be familiarized with the history and characteristics of the genre. The study of the function of the chivalric values displayed by the heroes and issues of power, violence and the supernatural will be central to the course. It will be based on a detailed analysis of two well-known specimens of medieval romance, Sir Orfeo and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Both texts will be made available at the beginning of the semester. Students will be expected to read allocated passages in advance to each session.
Language of instruction: English. Required language level: C1-C2.
Assessment: The final mark will be based on participation in class, a brief presentation and a 2000-word final essay. close
