WiSe 16/17: Societies and sustainability: perspectives from East and West
Justyna Monika Stypinska
Kommentar
The seminar will discuss various theoretical and practical approaches to sustainability in ecological, political, economic and social understanding. The focus will be laid on the social sustainability and the various social movements (e.g. degrowth), practices and activities which enhance the transitions to sustainability in contemporary societies. The seminar will bring together perspectives from the Western, industrialized countries with those which emerged in Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe, often pictured as lagging behind the highly advanced methods and approaches to sustainability developed in the industrialized countries, has nevertheless much to offer in the debate and its experiences from socialist times. The “quiet sustainability” described as widely practised and environmentally sustainable food self- provisioning in post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe (Smith & Jehlička, 2013) is just one example of how social sustainability is practised in those parts of Europe.
