WiSe 16/17: Redefining the Social. Latour and Ethnomethodology

Harald Wenzel

Kommentar

This course traces crucial steps of a radical reformulation of the “social” in recent social theory. On the one hand it is concerned with the fundamental critique that Ethnomethodology has brought forward against a normative “orthodox consensus” that very often has been seen as promoting conformism and “oversocialization”. How radical this alternative approach really is has been unveiled only recently – by the publication of several of unpublished studies by Harold Garfinkel (the dissertation has yet to be published, though). ----- On the other hand, the work of Bruno Latour can be counted as a second important voice in this radical reformulation of the “social”. Latour (with Woolgar) starts out to create a radical constructivism in the sociology of science that owes much of its thrust to its foundation in Ethnomethodology. The development of actor-network theory, however, appears to be an original turn as are Latour’s ideas for the “reassembling” of the social. ----- The course aims at providing a thorough understanding of these two approaches, of the theoretical field and the historical trajectory in which they emerge, of their similarities and differences, and of the repercussions which this new take in conceiving the “social” for the wider enterprise of sociology and sociological research will have. ----- Literature: Garfinkel, Harold 1952: The Perception of the Other: A Study in Social Order.
