WiSe 16/17: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies II: Provincializing Europe
Luz-Maria Gasser
Kommentar
This seminar strives to approach the construct of Europe, not only as geopolitical space but as discursive object, from an essentially post-colonial perspective. Taking its title from the book by Dipesh Chakrabarty, it will engage with his methods of doing this, but also aim to look beyond them, including the work of other thinkers of the subaltern studies group, that of African post-colonial scholars, as well as more traditional Western approaches. We will aim to tackle the idea of ‘Europe’ as one that informs the very ways we are able to think through history, modernity and nationhood, as well as how these ideas have been theorized by a range of thinkers emerging from both within and without it, including Franz Fanon, Etienne Balibar, Jacques Derrida, and Eric Hobsbawm, amongst others. This will help us problematise the concepts of border and nation within this continent, as well as the movements en- and disabled between and beyond these. The goal is to consider how we might renew the idea of Europe “from and for the margins”, rethinking its imaginative and discursive existence as these inform categorically various forms of cultural production. Participants will give one presentation, submit one short mid-term paper, and one long final paper, as well as be expected to keep up with weekly reading assignments and actively participate in class discussion.
