WiSe 16/17: The Socio-Economic Dimension of Sustainable Development: Poverty

The first of the recently proclaimed Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) reads „End poverty in all its forms everywhere“. Poverty eradication has not only become a universal political priority, it is a main element of sustainable development.
And everybody seems to know what poverty is. But what is poverty exactly? Who counts as poor. Should we do something against poverty? And if so, what?
In this seminar, we will try to find answers to these questions. Poverty is a social construct that can only be understood in light of specific social, cultural, economic and political contexts. Thus, poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon that cannot be analyzed through the lens of a single scientific discipline alone. This is why different disciplinary approaches towards poverty are highlighted in the course. Yet, it is the political reactions towards poverty that will be especially highlighted, together with the measurement of poverty and the role that poverty plays in development policy. The seminar will introduce students to the broad topic of poverty and will allow you to follow, understand, and critically scrutinize current national and international debates on poverty.
