WiSe 16/17: The City in Modern China
Brooks Jessup
Kommentar
One of the most fundamental transitions in Chinese society during the modern period is its shift from predominantly rural to urban. How do we understand the striking growth and transformation of the urban centers that now hold a majority of China’s population? This reading seminar introduces students to the study of Chinese cities from the seventeenth century to the present. We will examine and discuss the classical foundations, revisionist turns, and most recent trends in this important and dynamic field of research. Themes and issues include the transformation of everyday life, production of urban space, municipal governance and planning, civic ritual and culture, rural-urban relations, colonial encounters, and globalization.
