WiSe 16/17: Applying Social Network Analysis in Political Communication Research
Jan Niklas Kocks
Kommentar
Political communication research has long been defined by approaches that were either focusing on the various actors involved or on their communicative output. Yet recently approaches based on a network perspective have gained importance and they still continue to do so.
Social network analysis is a convenient and very applicable analytical solution to grasp the relations between politics, the media and citizens, even more so under the conditions of digitization and technologically induced media change. It allows for the analysis of communication flows and the exploration of otherwise often invisible patterns of (political) power.
In this seminar, students learn about the theoretical and empirical foundations of social network analysis critically analyze studies employing this approach and then plan and conduct their very own social network analyses in the field of political communication.
The seminar is an introductory course, previous experience in social network analysis is not necessary. Schließen
