This is a course on the economic history of Imperial Russia and the subsequent Soviet Union, which combines historical narratives with formal economic analysis. The course focuses on the 19th and 20th century Russian history which has been subject to different economic and political developments. The first part of the course will focus on the economic system of the Russian Empire. The second part of the course will concentrate in the analytical and structural determinants of communist economic organization with reference to the Soviet Union. The learning outcome is that students are expected to become conversant with the analytical tools and theoretical discussions presented in the literature such as Russian historical statistics, economic institutions as well as economic research in the field of Russian history. Attendance in all sessions is required. Students are required to make a 20-minute presentation in a week of their choice. The presentation serves as participation requirement. close
